Position Vacancy Advertisements
Employment and Compensation serves as the campus focal point for placing vacancy advertisements with newspapers. Because of the large volume of advertisements Employment Services places with certain publications, reduced fee structures have been negotiated in some cases. These cost savings are passed along to the department placing the ad through Employment and Compensation Services. Information regarding advertisements must be forwarded to UHR by 12:00 p.m. each Wednesday, and must include the following:
- A camera-ready copy of the advertisement
- Publications/web sites in which the advertisement should appear
- Date(s) the advertisement should appear, including alternate dates
- A "keyword" under which your ad will appear (e.g., Education, Accounting, etc.)
- Advertisement Layout/Design (see below for helpful hints)
- FRS # to charge for the cost of the advertisement
- Budgetary considerations/constraints
- Contact person in the department.
To ensure accuracy, the advertisement should be typed and formatted by the department
exactly as it is to appear in the ad. The copy should be submitted via email to jobads@umd.edu, by 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday for publication in the following Sunday papers. Additional considerations such as the inclusion of borders, logos, and the request for a cost estimate should be included under a separate cover. The Employment Services staff is available to assist departments in creating effective, high-visibility advertisements. Please call Lori Ganey at 301-405-5660 for more information regarding employment advertising.
Advertisement Layout/Design Hints
An effective advertisement includes the following elements:
- The headline should include "The University of Maryland" as well as the title of the position, preferably in bold, all caps
- The body of the advertisement should include the department/college name with a short description (optional). Briefly list the responsibilities of the position, and minimum qualification requirements such as education, years of experience, and other knowledge, skills, and abilities required. The closing date for the position, salary/benefit information, and application process details (e.g. instructions on submitting a resume to the search committee) should be included.
- The University requires that all advertisements include the Equal Opportunity Employer/Affirmative Action statement. It can either read "EOE/AA" or the more detailed statement, "The University of Maryland is an Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. Women and Minorities are encouraged to Apply"
- To increase the visibility of an advertisement, graphic enhancements may be added including borders, shading, and the inclusion of the UM logo. These enhancements increase the cost of the ad.
