Parental Leave for Faculty and Staff

The UMD Policies on Faculty and Staff Parental Leave and Other Family Supports are intended to support eligible faculty and staff in balancing professional and family demands during and after the addition of children to their family (by birth, adoption, foster parenting, and legal guardianship) through measures to promote a family friendly environment.

Recent Changes to the Faculty Parental Leave Policy

Effective September 19, 2019, the President amended and approved the UMD Faculty Parental Leave Policy on an interim basis.

Eligible 9-month faculty members employed by the institution for at least 1 semester and 12-month faculty members employed by the institution for at least 6 months shall now be assured a period of up to 12 weeks (i.e., 60 work days) of paid Parental Leave through a combination of paid leave charged to the faculty member’s accrued leave balance and/or Assured Parental Leave provided by the University.  Parental Leave and all other family support measures under this amended Policy shall be available on a continuous basis during a 6-month period surrounding the addition of a child (or children) to the family.

Parental Leave Workshops for Faculty and Staff

The Parental Leave workshop will provide faculty and staff members who are considering or preparing for the addition of children to their family and/or those managing employees who are preparing to go on leave an overview of the University’s amended Parental Leave Policy.  During the workshop we will cover topics such as when and how to request parental leave, eligibility requirements, the paid leave assurance period, and how parental leave interacts with Family Medical Leave and other leave benefits.
